Are you struggling to pay your home energy bills? If so, you may be able to get help through the Kansas Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP).

What is LIEAP?

LIEAP is a federally funded program that provides financial assistance to low-income households in Kansas to help them pay for their home energy bills. The program is administered by the Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF) and is available to households that meet certain income and household size requirements and are responsible for paying their own home energy bills. If you are struggling to pay your home energy bills, LIEAP can provide you with the financial assistance you need to keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

What do you need to know in order to apply for LIEAP?

You must apply for LIEAP during the application period which, for 2023, runs from Tuesday, January 3, 2023 through 5:00 p.m on Friday, March 31, 2023. To apply for LIEAP, you will need to provide proof of your income, household size, and energy bills. You may also be required to provide other information or documentation, depending on your individual circumstances. Go to the Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF) website where you will find information about LIEAP, how to apply, eligibility requirements, and the documents and information that you will need to provide. When you are ready, you can apply online through the  DCF Self-Service Portal. You can also apply for LIEAP by contacting the DCF directly at 1-800-432-0043.

What can you expect after you apply for LIEAP?

After you apply for LIEAP, the DCF will review your application and determine if you are eligible for assistance. If you are approved for LIEAP, a one-time payment will be made directly to your energy provider to help you pay your energy bills. The amount of the payment will be based on your household size, income, and energy needs. If you are not approved for LIEAP, the DCF will notify you in writing and provide you with information on how to appeal the decision.
