Disaster Response

Disaster Services

At Catholic Charities of Southwest Kansas, we are committed to providing comprehensive disaster response and recovery services to support individuals and communities throughout our region. Our proactive approach to disaster preparedness ensures that we are ready to respond when the unexpected occurs, fostering resilience and hope for those in need.

Disaster Preparedness

Our Disaster Preparedness Program, funded by grants from the Cargill Foundation through Catholic Charities USA, is designed to support all parishes in the diocese. The program equips local communities and individuals with the tools and resources necessary to prepare for and recover from potential future disasters.

A key component of our preparedness efforts is the Plan, Prepare, and Protect Program, which focuses on individual and household preparedness. This program is available to all parishes and covers essential topics such as protecting important documents, identifying potential hazards, compiling an emergency kit, and understanding household insurance coverage. In addition to this foundational program, The Catholic Disaster Preparedness Program explores the natural intersection of our Gospel Call, the needs of those suffering, and the gifts we have to share before, during, and after a disaster event. This series is a valuable resource for individuals, families, parish leaders, and volunteers.

We are committed to Community and Institutional Preparedness. Our goal is to ensure that churches, schools, and other institutions within our diocese are well-prepared for disasters. We believe that as Catholics, we have a responsibility to not only safeguard our own institutions but also to extend support to the broader community during times of crisis.

We invite parish leaders and other organization leaders to contact us to have one of our staff members facilitate this training series. Volunteers, especially parish volunteers, who are interested in sharing this training with parishes and other interested organizations are also encouraged to reach out.

Our commitment is to empower communities with the knowledge and resources needed to effectively prepare for and respond to disasters, ensuring a coordinated and compassionate response when it is needed most.

Assessment and Disaster Operations

We have conducted thorough assessments of all 28 counties in our diocese, categorizing and prioritizing them based on vulnerability, availability of partner agencies, access to relief services, and other key factors. This strategic approach ensures that we can provide targeted and effective support where it is needed most.

A critical tool in our assessment process is the Disaster Operations Map developed by Catholic Charities USA. This interactive map was created to better target mitigation, preparedness, relief, and recovery projects. It is designed to serve communities that are at the greatest risk for disasters and often overlooked or excluded from federal assistance.

The Disaster Operations Map visualizes essential data, including:

  • Acutely Vulnerable Populations: Identifying uninsured homeowners or renters, the homeless, and subsidized renters at the local level.
  • Social Vulnerability: Information about social vulnerability, housing and transportation vulnerability, and demographics.
  • Resource Allocation: Strategically allocating resources to prepare for disasters and identifying where vulnerable populations live within an affected area.

The map is a critical resource for understanding the complex landscape of disaster vulnerability and ensuring that our efforts are directed towards those who need it most. You can explore the interactive Disaster Operations Map here.
