Life skills are important because they help us negotiate the demands and challenges of life. They help us secure our own well-being, succeed in life and become active and productive members of the community.
Life skills are often taught by parents, either indirectly through example, or directly with the purpose of teaching a specific skill. Parenting itself can be considered a life-skill.
Sometimes, when families and relationships break down due to parental lapses, divorce, substance abuse or other risky behavior, or families grew up in completely different cultures, the opportunity to learn important life-skills that will help them to succeed in life are missed. For this reason, Catholic Charities offers several life-skills classes to fill in the gaps. Here is a list of upcoming classes. All classes are held at the Catholic Charities office at 705 Ballinger St in Garden City. Anyone is welcome to attend:

Many refugees and immigrants who are struggling to get on their feet do not know US Laws and Policies that are in place to protect them, and those around them. The Garden City Police Department will bridge the knowledge gap by covering topics such as childcare and abuse, domestic violence, sexual harassment, smoking restrictions, public intoxication, taxes (sales, property, vehicle, IRS, etc.), draft registration, and more. In this class information covering all immigration laws and policies will be discussed, including obtaining your green card, obtaining citizenship, family reunification laws and policies, and more. Next, learn how to create a solid resume that showcases your education, work experience, activities, skills that employers are looking for, and references. Learn how to prepare for a good interview and get a good handle on some of the most common interview questions. Get some tips on how to dress for success and review some of the reasons that people do not get jobs so that you will know what to avoid. This workshop is free and open to the public. Having a clean and safe home is something we all want to have! Attendees of this interactive class will learn about maintaining a clean and safe home environment. Cleaning tips and strategies for staying on top of housework with a busy schedule will be discussed as well as tips for how to make your home safe for yourself and children.
