In the vibrant community of Garden City, a remarkable story of resilience and commitment unfolds at Catholic Charities of Southwest Kansas. Adner Louis, originally a refugee from Haiti, now serves as a CMA Benefit Specialist in the Refugee Resettlement Program. His journey from the troubled streets of Port-au-Prince to the heart of Kansas is a vivid testament to the enduring spirit of hope and the transformative power of community support.

From Haiti to New Beginnings 

Adner’s life in Haiti was marked by a blend of personal ambition and the harsh realities of his surroundings. "I was living in Port-au-Prince, in Haiti," he recalls. Married in 2015, Adner managed a warehouse distributing essential supplies and even launched his own business, a wholesale grocery store, in 2021. Despite the promise of success, the increasing instability in Haiti, marked by rampant kidnappings and violence, cast a long shadow over his achievements. "Things were about to be good for me. But then there was insecurity," Adner shares, reflecting on the dire circumstances that led him to seek safer shores for his wife and two small boys.

The Path to Parole and a New Home

The turning point came when the safety of his family could no longer be assured in Haiti. "They kidnapped a nephew of mine in 2015. And in 2022, they kidnapped two of my cousins for ransom," Adner recounts, highlighting the perilous environment that compelled him to apply for parole to the United States. In response to the escalating dangers, Adner applied for humanitarian parole—a special permission to enter the United States for urgent humanitarian reasons. Unlike the term "parole" in the criminal justice context, which involves conditional release from prison, humanitarian parole allows individuals who are otherwise inadmissible to temporarily enter the United States due to emergency circumstances. The relief was palpable when the confirmation came through, allowing him and his family a chance at a new beginning. "That's why we are here in the United States," Adner explains, reflecting on the life-changing opportunity parole provided for him and his family.

Challenges and Triumphs in America

Arriving in the United States in April 2023, Adner faced new challenges, from obtaining a work permit to finding employment. His resilience shone through each obstacle. Settling initially in Orlando, FL, and later moving to Garden City to join his wife who secured a job first, Adner’s journey was supported by community resources, including the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and, significantly, Catholic Charities. "When I came to Garden City, the most helpful resource was Catholic Charities," he states, underscoring the crucial support he received which later led to his current role.

A New Role, A New Purpose

As a CMA Benefit Specialist, Adner does more than just guide other refugees through paperwork and procedures; he connects with them on a personal level, driven by his own experiences. "I really enjoy my job at Catholic Charities because I can understand how when I came here, if I didn't have a friend or someone to drive me somewhere and tell me what to do, it was very difficult," he explains. His role involves determining eligibility for assistance, facilitating important appointments, and ensuring new arrivals navigate their early days in the U.S. with fewer hurdles.

Adner’s advice to other refugees is poignant and practical: "I would tell them, first of all, to come to Catholic Charities... I would advise them to come here and they will receive help." His journey underscores the importance of community support and the profound impact of organizations like Catholic Charities in fostering not just survival, but the opportunity to thrive.

Educational Journey

Adner recently achieved another milestone—a bachelor’s degree in business management, which he pursued through an online program starting in 2016. "I was working towards a bachelor's degree in business management. It played a very wonderful role in establishing that little business," he notes, reflecting on how his education has been pivotal in both his personal and professional life. This accomplishment not only marks a significant personal achievement but also enhances his ability to serve the community more effectively, applying his knowledge and skills to assist others in navigating complex challenges.

A Beacon of Hope

Reflecting on his work, Adner shares a profound insight: "What I see is that life is not only about earning for your life and your family. You have to make a difference in the world. When God allows you to be in a position or to have a little knowledge about something, he doesn't give it to you only for serving your family but to make a difference in the community. Catholic Charity helps me with applying what I know to help other people feel better."
